Never send a credit account payment to Experian

Dear Max,

I would like to pay off a creditor. Who do I send a check to? Do I send it to Experian?

Dear VLS,

You should never send a bill payment to Experian. Payments should be sent only to the current account owner. That may be the original lender, but also could be the collection agency, if the debt has been sold or transferred.

The only time you would send a check to Experian is if you were ordering a personal credit report by mail and did not qualify for a free copy under the Fair Credit Reporting Act (FCRA) and already had received a free report under the Fair and Accurate Credit Transactions Act (FACT Act) and any other applicable state law.
