The year 2021 began with cautious but genuine optimism in much of the world, buoyed by the twin effects of a new U.S. administration, and the hope that, with new vaccines, the COVID-19 pandemic would soon end.
That optimism faded somewhat as the year unfolded, as new strains of COVID-19 emerged, natural disasters reminded us of ongoing climate change, and new cyber threats emerged from our ever-more digitally intertwined world.
