Historically, the introduction of EMV chip technology has resulted in a significant drop in card-present fraud, but a spike in card-not-present (CNP) fraud.
CNP fraud accounts for 60% to 70% of all card fraud in many countries and is increasing. Merchants and card issuers in the United States likely will see a rise in CNP fraud as EMV migration occurs — although it may be more gradual as issuers and merchants upgrade to chip-based cards.
