The automotive industry is constantly changing. Shifting consumer demands and preferences, as well as dynamic economic factors, make the need for data-driven insights more important than ever. As we head into the National Automobile Dealers Association (NADA) Show this week, we wanted to explore some of the trends in the used vehicle market in our Special Report: State of the Automotive Finance Market Report. Packed with valuable insights and the latest trends, we’ll take a deep dive into the multi-faceted used vehicle market and better understand how consumers are financing used vehicles. 9+ model years grow Although late-model vehicles tend to represent much of the used vehicle finance market, we were surprised by the gradual growth of 9+ model year (MY) vehicles. In 2019, 9+MY vehicles accounted for 26.6% of the used vehicle sales. Since then, we’ve seen year-over-year growth, culminating with 9+MY vehicles making up a little more than 30% of used vehicle sales in 2024. Perhaps more interesting though, is who is financing these vehicles. Five years ago, prime and super prime borrowers represented 42.5% of 9+MY vehicles, however, in 2024, those consumers accounted for nearly 54% of 9+MY originations. Among the more popular 9+MY segments, CUVs and SUVs comprised 36.9% of sales in 2024, up from 35.2% in 2023, while cars went from 44.3% to 42.9% year-over-year and pickup trucks decreased from 15.9% to 15.6%. 2024 highlights by used vehicle age group To get a better sense of the overall used market, the segments were broken down into three age groups—9+MY, 4-8MY, and current +3MY—and to no surprise, the finance attributes vary widely. While we’ve seen the return of new vehicle inventory drive used vehicle values lower, it could be a sign that consumers are continuing to seek out affordable options that fit their lifestyle. In fact, the average loan amount for a 9+MY vehicle was $19,376 in 2024, compared to $24,198 for a vehicle between 4-8 years old and $32,381 for +3MY vehicle. Plus, more than 55% of 9+MY vehicles have monthly payments under $400. That’s not an insignificant number for people shopping with the monthly payment in mind. In 2024, the average monthly payment for a used vehicle that falls under current+3MY was $608. Meanwhile, 4-8MY vehicles came in at an average monthly payment of $498, and 9+MY vehicles had a $431 monthly payment. Taking a deeper dive into average loan amounts based on specific vehicle types—as of 2024, current +3MY cars came in at $28,721, followed by CUVs/SUVs ($31,589) and pickup trucks ($40,618). As for 4-8MY vehicles, cars came in with a loan amount of $22,013, CUVs/SUVs were at $23,133, and pickup trucks at $31,114. Used 9+MY cars had a loan amount of $19,506, CUVs/SUVs came in at $17,350, and pickup trucks at $22,369. With interest rates remaining top of mind for most consumers as we’ve seen them increase in recent years, understanding the growth from 2019-2024 can give a holistic picture of how the market has shifted over time. For instance, the average interest rate for a used current+3MY vehicle was 8.0% in 2019 and grew to 10.2% in 2024, the average rate for a 4-8MY vehicle went from 10.3% to 12.9%, and the average rate for a 9+MY vehicle increased from 11.4% to 13.8% in the same time frame. Looking ahead to the used vehicle market It’s important for automotive professionals to understand and leverage the data of the used market as it can provide valuable insights into trending consumer behavior and pricing patterns. While we don’t exactly know where the market will stand in a few years—adapting strategies based on historical data and anticipating shifts can help professionals better prepare for both challenges and opportunities in the future. Experian’s State of the Automotive Finance Market Report: Q4 2022 found that the year-over-year (YOY) average new loan amount increased 4.04%, a smaller growth rate compared to 12.46% YOY in Q4 2021

To help the industry better understand the widespread growth, ahead of the show we compiled an Auto Finance Year-in-Review report to break down all things EV—from financing trends to vehicle segments and more.

More than seven million Americans who are unbanked cite high account fees, insufficient funds to meet minimum balances and a lack of needed products and services as the main reasons for not having a checking or savings account.1 Credit unions understand that being unbanked comes at a steep cost and have turned their focus to developing products and strategies that prioritize financial inclusion — a movement to combat inequities in banking and better serve the financial needs of marginalized communities. In 2022, the House passed Expanding Financial Access for Underserved Communities Act to allow federal credit unions to add underserved areas to their fields of membership as a means of improving financial inclusion. “We believe diversity, inclusion, equity, belonging and accessibility has to be weaved into the strategic fabric of an organization [and its] culture," says Max Villaronga, President and Chief Executive Officer of Raiz Federal Credit Union. “When we don't participate in [diversity, equity and inclusion], we are complicit in essentially keeping people out of the banking system." For credit unions, driving financial inclusion starts with setting a vision that will leave a lasting legacy that includes fostering financial empowerment, closing the credit gap and building generational wealth among the communities they serve. Here's a roadmap for getting started. Best practices for engagement Establishing a set of best practices is the essential starting point for improving financial inclusion. The process begins with the mission statement and extends to all aspects of operations from hiring procedures to sponsorships and donations. Villaronga advocates three strategies for engagement: Engage the leadership team Conversations about financial inclusion need to start at the top. The C-suite must be willing to be honest about the barriers and willing to adopt changes that will make credit unions more inclusive. “[T]hese systemic barriers will exist until somebody deliberately moves them out of the way," Villaronga says. “The people who are feeling those barriers are not in the position to do the moving it's up to [CEOs and CFOs] to decide to do something to make a difference." Making a difference starts with choosing a leadership team that reflects the demographics of local communities. Case in point: At Raiz Federal Credit Union in El Paso, Texas, senior management and the board have LGBTQIA+ representation and include members from diverse racial and ethnic identities. The board of directors has also prioritized creating a pipeline that will attract more diverse talent to the board. “Many of [our board members] come from underserved backgrounds in our border community," Villaronga says. “This is a very personal journey for them because they can see themselves in the lives of the people we're serving." Build trust in underserved communities According to an FDIC Survey, “unbanked" U.S. households listed a lack of trust in financial institutions as a top reason for not having a bank account. And lack of access to a checking or savings account is most prominent among racial and ethnic minorities and low-income communities.2 Actions speak louder than words, according to Villaronga. Raiz Federal Credit Union uses diverse images in its advertising and provides information in both English and Spanish. The credit union was also awarded the Juntos Avanzamos (Together We Advance) designation from Inclusiv for its commitment to serving and empowering Hispanic communities by providing safe, affordable and relevant financial services. Villaronga believes that a designation like Juntos Avanzamos sends the message to the community that the credit union is committed to improving general financial literacy and pre-loan education, as well as reducing higher charge-offs and other barriers to accessing financial services that exist in lending and serving underserved communities. Dispel financial inclusion myths Among traditional financial institutions, myths about financial inclusion are widespread and include falsehoods that pricing products for marginalized communities are too challenging, reaching out is not profitable, and providing financial products to underserved markets is too risky. “Credit unions were really built to extend credit [and] were also originally established to serve consumers that were being ignored by the existing systems that were in place but those consumers are still being ignored today," Villaronga says. “Are those communities too risky to serve? Some companies are serving them [and] they would not be doing so if it was not profitable." Raiz Federal Credit Union offers several affordable loan products — from credit builder loans to citizenship loans and payday lender payoff loans along with credit cards — that allow members to build their credit scores and establish positive credit histories. Rather than pricing loans based on what the competition is charging, Villaronga calculates the fixed and variable costs, failure fraction and target return on assets to get a floor pricing per unit. The approach, he adds, allowed Raiz Federal Credit Union to report earnings of over 150 basis points in 2021 while maintaining a 12 percent capital ratio, proving that financial inclusion is good for the bottom line. “THE IDEA THAT YOU CANNOT [ACHIEVE FINANCIAL INCLUSION] IN A WAY THAT'S SAFE AND SOUND AND SATISFIES THE [NATIONAL CREDIT UNION ADMINISTRATION] IS TRULY A MYTH." - Max Villaronga, President and CEO, Raiz Federal Credit Union Partner for Success For credit unions, an important part of achieving financial inclusion goals is identifying partners that can help. Raiz Federal Credit Union set a goal to increase automated lending from 20 percent to 60 percent, but using a traditional loan origination program was insufficient to hit that target. In today’s digital-first environment, fraud threats are growing in sophistication and scope. It’s critical for credit unions to not only understand the specific threats presented by life online, but to also be prepared with a solid fraud detection and prevention plan. Below, we’ve outlined a few fraud trends that credit unions should be aware of and prepared to address. 2021 Trends to Watch: Digitization and the Movement to Life Online Trend #1: Digital Acceleration As we look ahead to the rest of 2021 and beyond, we expect to see adoption of digital strategies nearing the top of credit unions’ list of priorities. Members’ expectations for their digital experience have permanently shifted, and many credit unions now have members using online channels who traditionally wouldn’t have. This has led to a change in the types of fraud we see as online activities increased in volume. Trend #2: First-Party Fraud is On the Rise First party fraud is on the rise – 43% of financial executives say that mule activity is up 10% or more compared to attack rates prior to the pandemic, according to Trace Fooshee, Senior Analyst for Aite Group, and we expect to see this number grow. The ability for credit unions to identify and segregate the “good guys” from “bad guys” is getting more difficult to discern and this detail is more important than ever as credit unions work to create frictionless digital experiences by using digital tools and strategies. Trend #3: Continual Uptick in Synthetic Identity Fraud We expect synthetic identity fraud (SID) to continue to rise in 2021 as cybercriminals become more sophisticated in the digital space and as members continue with their new digital habits. Additionally, fraudsters can use SIDs to bring significant damage and loss to credit unions through fraudulent checks, debit cards, person-to-person and automated clearing house (ACH) transactions. More and more, fraudsters are seen opening accounts and remaining very patient – using an account to build and nurture a trusted relationship with the credit union and then remain dormant for two years before ensuing in any sort of abuse. Once the fraudster feels confident that they can bypass authentication processes or avoid a new product vetting, oftentimes, they will take that opportunity to get easy access to all solutions credit unions have available and will abuse them all at once. There are no signs of fraud slowing, so credit unions will need to stay vigilant in their fraud protection and prevention plans. We’ve outlined a few tips for credit unions to help protect member data while reducing risk. The Fight Against Fraud: Four Key Tips Tip #1: Manage Each Fraud Type Appropriately Preventing and detecting fraud requires a multi-level solution. This can involve new methods for authenticating current and prospective members, as well as incorporating synthetic identity services and identity proofing throughout the member lifecycle. For example, credit unions should consider taking extra verification steps during the account opening process as a preventative measure to minimize SID infiltration and associated fraud losses. As credit unions continue down the path of digitization, it’s also important to add in digital signals and behavior-based verification, such as information about the device a consumer is logging in from to heighten defenses against bad actors. Tip #2: Be Resourceful In the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic, many have asked, “How should credit unions approach fraud prevention tactics when in-person contact is limited or unavailable?” In some cases, you might need to be willing to say no to requests or get creative and find other options. Sometimes, it takes leveraging current resources and using what’s readily available to allow for a binary decision tree. For example, if you’re suspicious of a dormant account that you think could be synthetic, call them, and ask yourself these questions: Did they answer? Was the phone still active? Send the account holder an email – did you get a reply? Is this a new member? Is this a new channel for the member? Could they have logged on to do this instead of calling the call center? Tip #3: Empower Members Through Education Members like to know that their credit unions are taking the necessary steps and applying the right measures to keep their data secure. While members might not want every detail, they do want to know that the security measures are there. Require the use of strong passwords, step-up authentication, and empower members with alerts, notifications, and card controls. Additionally, protect members by providing resources like trainings, webinars, and best practices articles, where they can learn about current cyber trends and how to protect their data. Tip #4: Trust Data Many credit unions rely on an employee’s decision to decide when to take action and what action to take. The challenge with this approach comes when the credit union needs to reduce friction for members or tighten controls to prevent fraud, because it’s extremely hard to know exactly what drove prior actions. A better alternative is to rely on scores and specific data. Tweaks to the scores or data points that drive actions allow credit unions to achieve the desired member experience and risk tolerance – just be sure to leverage internal experts help figure out those policies. By determining what conditions drive actions before the actions are taken (instead of doing it one case at a time) the decisions remain transparent and actionable. The CU Times recently reported on a nationwide synthetic identity fraud ring impacting several major credit unions and banks. Investigators for the Federal and New York governments charged 13 people and three businesses in connection to the nationwide scheme. The members of the crime ring were able to fraudulently obtain more than $1 million in loans and credit cards from 10 credit unions and nine banks. Opportunistic criminals have taken advantage of the shift to digital interactions, loosening of some controls in online transactions, and the desire of financial institutions to maintain their portfolios – seeking new ways to perpetrate fraud. Time – it’s the only resource we can’t get more of, which is why we tend to obsess over saving it. Despite this obsession, it can be hard for us to identify time-wasting activities. Financial institutions preparing for the launch of the Financial Accounting Standard Board’s (FASB) new current expected credit loss model, or CECL, may have concerns when it comes to preparedness, implications and overall impact. JT: To prepare for the CECL transition process, companies should conduct an operational readiness review, which includes: Analyzing your data for existing gaps.
