This summer, Experian is releasing the market’s first-ever credit solution that enables consumers to apply for credit with a simple text message. Utilizing patent-pending mobile identification through our Smart Lookup process, most consumers will be recognized by their device credentials and in turn bypass the need to fill out a lengthy credit application. To learn more about this new technology and how the innovation came to market, we interviewed Steve Yin, Experian’s Vice President of New Ventures for the DataLabs. Yin has worked with a few dozen clients to gain feedback and gauge interest on this idea, which was birthed in early spring 2016. 1. Tell me about Experian’s DataLabs. How long has it existed and what type of work is produced here? The DataLabs was started a bit over six years ago by Eric Haller – current Global EVP of the DataLabs – with the vision of providing an advanced data R&D, analytics, and incubation capability for Experian and our largest clients. The group started with one lab in San Diego supporting a handful of business units in North America. Today we have DataLabs on three continents supporting all the business units and geographies where Experian does business around the world. The work we focus on is usually new market and new data/technology. We endeavor to follow an experimental design approach in most of our projects and products: identify a problem, develop a hypothesis, and execute on research to germinate a solution. Given our relatively small size compared to Experian overall, we must be very disciplined about the types of projects and products we take on. We filter projects by potential impact (big marketing, complex problems, leveraged opportunities) and probability of success. Our projects are initiated by one of three primary avenues: client discussion/request, internal discussion/request, and organic discovery within the DataLabs. 2. Text for CreditTM is one of Experian’s newest products, and I understand the DataLabs was instrumental in the development from concept to end-product. How did this idea emerge and shape in the Lab? The concept evolved after talking with our clients who were trying to figure out how they could provide access to credit to potential customers through their mobile devices. With the explosion of smartphones and the attachment people have to them, it felt odd that the credit application process had not evolved to synch up with the mobile experience individuals enjoy in every other aspect of their lives. Customers don’t want to fill out lengthy forms to apply for credit, nor do they want to discover they may not qualify for a credit offer at the cash register after being invited to open a store card. We wanted to find a way to provide the customer with the ability to apply for credit seamlessly on their devices, limiting the fields of data they needed to supply, and also enhance the overall credit experience for retailers and consumers. Our DataLabs allow us the runway to preform breakthrough experimentations with data.  After trial and error with many different approaches in the lab, we knew we had a winner with text for credit.  It’s easy to use, the customer experience is frictionless, it requires minimal infrastructure from our clients and it can be implemented to solve for a large variety of instant credit situations. 3. What excites you most about this product? This has been a fun project. There are several things that make it cool, and most revolve around the reception we’ve had with clients, knowing that we’re delivering something innovative and useful to our clients, their partners and ultimately to consumers. We’re enabling a segment of the consumer landscape to interact with financial institutions on their own terms, from their mobile devices. 4. Have clients been closely involved in providing feedback on the concept and overall product design? Definitely. We’ve been working with clients on refining the concept, design and delivery of Text for Credit since almost day one. We learned very early on that private branding and a flexible user experience would be important since clients have different needs and desires relative to user flow. We also learned that simple integration with existing systems would enable adoption. And critically, we confirmed that providing a total solution rather than small components would enable us to position Text for Credit very differently and facilitate a great end-user experience for our clients. 5. Mobile is now clearly a dominant channel for consumers, and it only makes sense for lenders to embrace it. Is there more on the horizon for the world of mobile and credit optimization? Text for Credit is a beachhead of our broader mobile discovery and development. As clients begin to embrace delivery of credit in a mobile-first environment, we can foresee evolutions like the location-based triggers and integration with cross-channel marketing initiatives spanning social media, paid electric media, market places, and perhaps even integration with voice. In addition to this broadening of offerings, we may also look to creating greater functional value for clients in specific verticals where mobile devices are inherently suited for data and decision delivery. This could include streamlined credit in retail, auto, and mortgage markets where being able to offer credit at the right time, at the right place, to the right people would deliver great value for our clients. Millennials have long been the hot topic over the course of the past few years with researchers, brands and businesses all seeking to understand this large group of people. As they buy homes, start families and try to conquest their hefty student loan burdens, all will be watching. Still, there is a new crew coming of age. Enter Gen Z. It is estimated that they make up ¼ of the U.S. population, and by 2020 they will account for 40% of all consumers. Understanding them will be critical to companies wanting to succeed in the next decade and beyond. The oldest members of this next cohort are between the ages of 18 and 20, and the youngest are still in elementary school. But ultimately, they will be larger than the mystical Millennials, and that means more bodies, more buying power, more to learn. Experian recently took a first look at the oldest members of this generation, seeking to gain insights into how they are beginning to use credit. In regards to credit scores, the eldest Gen Z members sported a VantageScore® of 631 in 2016. By comparison, younger Millennials were at 626 and older Millennials were at 638. Given their young age, Gen Z debt levels are low with an average debt-to-income at just 5.7%. Their tradelines largely consist of bankcards, auto and student loans. Their average income is at $33.8k. For their total annual plastic spend, data reveals this oldest group of Gen Z spent about $9.5k, slightly more than the younger Millennials who came in at roughly $9k. Surprisingly, there was a very small group of Gen Z already on file with a mortgage, but this figure was less than .5%. Auto loans were also small, but likely to grow. Of those Gen Z members who have a credit file, an estimated 12% have an auto trade. This is just the beginning, and as they age, their credit files will thicken, and more insights will be gained around how they are managing credit, debt and savings. While they are young today, some studies say they already receive about $17 a week in allowance, equating to about $44 billion annually in purchase power in the U.S. Factor in their influence on parental or household purchases and the number could be closer to $200 billion! For all brands, financial services companies included, it is obvious they will need to engage with this generation in not just a digital manner, but a mobile manner. They are being raised in an era of instant, always-on access. They expect a quick, seamless and customized mobile experience.  Retailers have 8 seconds or less — err on the side of less — to capture their attention. In general, marketers and lenders should consider the following suggestions: Message with authenticity Maintain a long-term vision Connect them with something bigger Provide education for financial literacy and of course Keep up with technological advances. All of which are exploited by an online and mobile-driven market, along with an increase in data breaches and dark web sharing. It’s a real and growing problem that’s impacting all markets. So many insights and learnings to report after the first full day of 2017 Vision sessions. From the musings shared by tech engineer and pioneer Steve Wozniak, to a panel of technology thought leaders, to countless breakout sessions on a wide array of business topics … here’s a look at our top 10 from the day. A mortgage process for the digital age. At last. In his opening remarks, Experian President of Credit Services Alex Lintner asked the audience to imagine a world when applying for a mortgage simply required a few clicks or swipes. Instead of being sent home to collect a hundred pieces of paper to verify employment, income and assets, a consumer could click on a link and provide a few credentials to verify everything digitally. Finally, lenders can make this a reality, and soon it will be the only way consumers expect to go through the mortgage process. The global and U.S. economies are stable. In fact, they are strong. As Experian Vice President of Analytics Michele Raneri notes, “the fundamentals and technicals look really solid across the countries.” While many were worried a year ago that Brexit would turn the economy upside down, it appears everything is good. Consumer confidence is high. The Dow Jones Index is high. The U.S. unemployment rate is at 4.7%. Home prices are up year-over-year. While there has been a great deal of change in the world – politically and beyond – the economy is holding strong. The rise of the micropreneur. This term is not officially in the dictionary … but it will be. What is it? A micropreneur is a business with 0 to 4 employees bringing in no more than $200k in annual revenue. But the real story is that numbers show microbusiness are improving on many fronts when it comes to contribution to the economy and overall performance compared to other small businesses. Keep an eye on these budding business people. Fraud is running fierce. Synthetic identity losses are estimated in the hundreds of millions annually, with 50% year-over year growth. Criminals are now trying to use credit cleaners to get tradelines removed from used Synthetic IDs. Oh, and it is essential for businesses to ready themselves for “Dark Web” threats. Experts advise to harden your defenses (and play offense) to keep pace with the criminal underground. As soon as you think you’ve protected everything, the criminals will find a gap. The cloud is cool and so are APIs. A panel of thought leaders took to the main stage to discuss the latest trends in tech. Experian Global CIO Barry Libenson said, “The cloud has changed the way we deliver services to our customers and clients, making it seamless and elastic.” Combine that with API, and the goal is to ultimately make all Experian data available to its customers. Experian President of Decision Analytics Steve Platt added, “We are enabling you to tap into what you need, when you need it.” No need to “rip and replace” all your tech. Expect more regulation – and less. A panel of regulatory experts addressed the fast-changing regulatory environment. With the new Trump administration settling in, and calls for change to Dodd-Frank and the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB), it’s too soon to tell what will unfold in 2017. CFPB Director Richard Cordray may be making a run for governor of Ohio, so he could be transitioning out sooner than the scheduled close of his July 2018 term. The auto market continues to cruise. Experian’s auto expert, Malinda Zabritski, revealed the latest and greatest stats pertaining to the auto market. A few numbers to blow your mind … U.S. passenger cars and light trucks surpassed 17 million units for the second consecutive year Most new vehicle buyers in the U.S. are 45 years of age or older Crossover and sport utility vehicles remain popular, accounting for 40% of the market in 2016 – this is also driving up finance payments since these vehicles are more expensive. There are signs the auto market is beginning to soften, but interest rates are still low, and leasing is hot. Defining alternative data. As more in the industry discuss the need for alternative data to decision, it often gets labeled as something radical. But in reality, alternative data should be simple. Experian Sr. Director of Government Affairs Liz Oesterle defined it as “getting more financial data in the system that is predicted, validated and can be disputed.” #DeathtoPasswords – could it be a reality? It’s no secret we live in a digital world where we are increasingly relying on apps and websites to manage our lives, but let’s throw out some numbers to quantify the shift. In 2013, the average U.S. consumer had 26 online accounts. By 2015, that number increased to 118 online accounts. By 2020, the average person will have 207 online accounts. When you think about this number, and the passwords associated with these accounts, it is clear a change needs to be made to managing our lives online. Experian Vice President David Britton addressed his session, introducing the concept of creating an “ultimate consumer identity profile,” where multi-source data will be brought together to identify someone. It’s coming, and all of us managing dozens of passwords can’t wait. “The Woz.” I guess you needed to be there, but let’s just say he was honest, opinionated and notes that while he loves tech, he loves it even more when it enables us to live in the “human world.” Too much wonderful content to share, but more to come tomorrow …

Knowing where e-commerce fraud takes place matters We recently hosted a Webinar with Mike Gross, Risk Strategy Director at Experian and  Julie Conroy, Research Director  at Aite Research Group, looking at the current state of card-not-present fraud, and what to prepare for in the coming year. Our biannual analysis of fraud attacks, served as a backdrop for the trends we’ve been seeing. I wanted to share some observations from the Webinar. Of course, if you prefer to hear it firsthand, you can download the archive recording here. I’ll start with the current landscape of card-not-present fraud. Julie shared 5 key trends her firm has identified regarding e-commerce fraud: Rising account take-over fraud Loyalty points targeted Increasingly global transactions Frustrating false declines Increasingly mobile consumers One particularly interesting note that Julie made was regarding consumer frustration levels towards forgotten passwords. While consumers are more frustrated when they’re locked out of access to their banking accounts (makes sense, it’s their money), forgotten passwords are more detrimental to e-commerce retailers since consumers are likely to go to another site. This equates to a frustrated consumer, and lost revenue for the business. Next, Mike went through the findings from our 2016 e-commerce fraud attack analysis. Fraud attack rates show the attempted fraudulent e-commerce transactions against the population of overall e-commerce orders. Overall, e-commerce attack rates spiked 33% in 2016. The biggest trends we saw included: Increased EMV adoption is driving a shift from counterfeit to card-not-present fraud 2B breached records disclosed in 2016, more than 3x any previous year Consumers reporting credit card fraud jumped from 15% in 2015 to over 32% in 2016 Attackers shifting locations slightly and international orders rely on freight forwarders 10 states saw an increase of over 100% in fraudulent orders Over 70 of the top 100 riskiest postal codes were not in last year’s list So, what will 2017 bring? Be prepared for more attacks, more global rings, more losses for businesses, and the emergence of IoT fraud. Businesses need to anticipate an increase of fraud over time and to be prepared. The value of employing a multi-layered approach to fraud prevention especially when it comes to authenticating consumers to validate transactions cannot be understated. By looking at all the points of the customer journey, businesses can better protect themselves from fraud, while maintaining a good consumer experience. Most importantly, having the right fraud solution in place can help businesses prevent losses both in dollars and reputation.

Turns out, Americans still don’t know much about CyberSecurity. That’s according to new research from the Pew Data Center, which conducted a cybersecurity knowledge quiz. The 13 question quiz was designed to test American’s knowledge on a number of cybersecurity issues and terms. A majority of online adults can identify a strong password and recognize the dangers of using public Wi-Fi. However, many struggle with more technical cybersecurity concepts, such as how to identify true two-factor authentication or determine if a webpage they are using is encrypted. As we in the industry know, cybersecurity is a complicated and diverse subject, but given the pervasiveness of news around cybersecurity, I was still a little surprised by the lack of knowledge. The typical (median) respondent answered only five of the 13 questions correctly (with a mean of 5.5 correct answers). 20% answered more than eight questions accurately, and just 1% received a “perfect score” by correctly answering all 13 questions. The study showed that public knowledge of cybersecurity is low on some relatively technical issues, like identifying the correct example of multi-factor authentication, understanding how VPNs minimize risk and knowing what a botnet is. On the flip side, the two questions that the majority of respondents answered correctly included identifying the strongest password from a list of four options and understanding that public Wi-Fi networks have risk even when they are password protected. Given the median scores, I was proud of missing only one question – guess I have more reading to do on Botnets. As an industry, it is our duty to not only create systems and securities to improve the tactical effectiveness of fraud prevention, but to educate consumers on many of these topics as well. They often are the first line of defense in stopping fraud and reducing the threat of breaches.

New industry report highlights the convergence of business growth and fraud prevention strategies Experian has published its first annual global fraud report covering the convergence of growth strategies and fraud prevention. The report, Global Business Trends: Protecting Growth Ambitions Against Rising Fraud Threats, is designed as a guide for senior executives and fraud prevention professionals, offering new insights on how the alignment of strategies for business growth and fraud prevention can help a business grow revenues while managing risks in an increasingly virtual world. The report identifies five trends that businesses should assess and take action on to mitigate fraud and improve the customer experience in today\'s fast-paced, consumer-centric environment: Applying right-sized fraud solutions to reduce unnecessary customer disruption: It\'s time to move on from a one-size-fits-all approach that creates more customer friction than necessary. Fraudsters have access to more data than ever before, including data traditionally used to verify identities, and they use that data to create an entire digital profile. Therefore, you can no longer get to the digital interaction data you need by managing the process in a siloed manner. Achieving an expansive view of the universal consumer requires multiple data sources working together. Achieving agility and scale using service-based models: Today, more and more companies are choosing subscription-based systems rather than building in-house or implementing on-premise solutions. Continuous upgrades and the access to new risk logic that come with subscription models provide more agility and faster response to emerging threats, no matter how fast your volume grows or what products, channels or geographies you pursue. Future-proofing fraud solution choices: Companies need access to a wide variety of traditional and emerging technologies and information sources to fill in knowledge gaps and blind spots where fraudsters try to hide. The ability to modify strategies quickly and catch fraud faster while improving the customer experience is a critical aspect of fraud prevention moving forward. Part four in our series on Insights from Vision 2016 fraud and identity track It was a true honor to present alongside Experian fraud consultant Chris Danese and Barbara Simcox of Turnkey Risk Solutions in the synthetic and first-party fraud session at Vision 2016. Chris and Barbara, two individuals who have been fighting fraud for more than 25 years, kicked off the session with their definition of first-party versus third-party fraud trends and shared an actual case study of a first-party fraud scheme. The combination of the qualitative case study overlaid with quantitative data mining and link analysis debunked many myths surrounding the identification of first-party fraud and emphasized best practices for confidently differentiating first-party, first-pay-default and synthetic fraud schemes. Following these two passionate fraud fighters was a bit intimidating, but I was excited to discuss the different attributes included in first-party fraud models and how they can be impacted by the types of data going into the specific model. There were two big “takeaways” from this session for me and many others in the room. First, it is essential to use the correct analytical tools to find and manage true first-party fraud risk successfully. Using a credit score to identify true fraud risk categorically underperforms. BustOut ScoreSM or other fraud risk scores have a much higher ability to assess true fraud risk. Second is the need to for a uniform first-party fraud bust-out definition so information can be better shared. By the end of the session, I was struck by how much diversity there is among institutions and their approach to combating fraud. From capturing losses to working cases, the approaches were as unique as the individuals in attendance This session was both educational and inspirational. I am optimistic about the future and look forward to seeing how our clients continue to fight first-party fraud.

Part 2 in our series on Insights from the Vision 2016 fraud and identity track With the growing number of data breach incidents taking place the stolen data from those attacks is being used to carry out social engineering attacks used to commit call center fraud. A recent study stated that global call center fraud has increased more than 45% in the last three years as fraudsters use social engineering to steal data and turn profits. The same report found that criminals might make up to 5 calls to a center, pretending to be the victim, before completing a fraudulent transaction. The importance of  strong call center authentication procedures is greater than ever. At the 35th annual Vision Conference, Bobbie Paul from Experian’s Global Consulting Practice, Stefan Schubert from JPMorgan Chase and I led a session about call center authentication. After introductions and a discussion about existing call center identity authentication techniques, Stefan took the podium and provided an excellent overview of how his company approaches call center authentication. He made an interesting point — despite introducing friction into his process, he was not of the opinion that knowledge-based authentication (KBA) was going away any time soon because of how deeply it is embedded into their processes and its applicability to most consumers. He also called out the importance of reviewing KBA configurations regularly to adjust which questions are being asked and the positive implication to deterring fraudsters. Bobbie followed Stefan to discuss emerging call center authentication technologies, including a new take on an old tool — document imaging. She also discussed the notion of phone printing, which does not specifically evaluate the voice on the phone, but looks at the characteristics of the call itself, including the type of phone being used and the environment from which the call is being made. One of the highlights of the session was the interaction with the audience — including a demonstration of how, with a little distraction, it was easy to walk away with an audience member’s phone, how a fraudster could access and compromise a phone and how a gummy bear could be used to defeat fingerprint biometrics. What I, and many others, took away from this is that even with newer fraud detection tools available, incorporating tried-and-true methods like KBA is still an important step into a holistic fraud detection strategy.

Industry’s first smart plug-and-play fraud platform allows companies to connect their own solutions, Experian products and third-party vendors in one place to better protect their customers from fraud threats Experian unveiled the fraud and identity industry’s first open platform designed to catch fraud faster, improve compliance and enhance the customer experience. Experian’s CrossCore™ gives companies an easier way to connect any new or existing tools and systems in one place, whether they are Experian, internal or third-party partner solutions. This “plug-and-play” capability allows companies to rapidly adapt to changing conditions and risks. “Our clients have expressed frustration over the lack of a truly holistic industry solution that delivers the level of confidence and control they need without requiring a massive multiyear project to replace everything they have,” said Steve Platt, global executive vice president, Fraud and Identity, Experian. “New fraud threats, updates to regulatory requirements and customer expectations for a hassle-free experience are making it challenging for fraud and compliance teams to keep up. CrossCore will give them the flexibility they need to balance customer protection with customer experience.” The CrossCore open platform enables organizations to manage services through a common access point that supports a layered approach to managing risks across providers. Last week we had the pleasure of joining more than 400 clients at the 35th annual Vision Conference — connecting business leaders to ideas and solutions. Over the next few weeks, we’ll be sharing some insights from our fraud and identity dedicated session track. I had the pleasure of presenting alongside the U.S. Secret Service, and we had a packed session to discuss the Dark Web — what it is, how it’s accessed, how criminals are exploiting it to commit fraud and the human impact of the massive global cybercrime problem. According to McAfee®, cybercrime represents a $500 billion cost to the global economy — and that’s projected to rise to $600 billion this year, outpacing any other form of crime. With the Internet economy generating between $2 trillion and $3 trillion annually, that means cybercrime is extracting roughly 15 to 20 percent of the entire value created by the Internet. This is a massive problem, and it’s not going away. Unfortunately, there are countless tools and services to commit fraud available on the Web, providing attackers with the cloak of anonymity they need to compromise accounts, mimic legitimate users and submit fraudulent transactions. Device intelligence helps unmask these activities. It is a critical component to defend against the threat, and it provides insight into every interaction throughout a typical customer journey (from account setup to login and account maintenance to transactions). Without this visibility into users’ historical behavior and typical population patterns, organizations often have limited options to target attackers and identify anomalous behaviors. This is key to a successful cybercrime detection and mitigation strategy. Another important point in the session regarded recent law enforcement and private industry successes in identifying, tracking, apprehending and prosecuting online attackers. We thankfully have made significant strides in this area, as evidenced by the work of the Secret Service and other law enforcement organizations, but the collaboration must continue — and intensify. As mentioned in a CNBC story published on the same day as our presentation, the Dark Web is an increasingly mainstream source for everything from financial crime to drug trade and human trafficking. Unfortunately, most businesses are in the dark about the growing criminal underground, but Experian can help. With proper fraud expertise and innovative tools to defend against these ever-evolving threats, organizations can uncloak the attackers and safeguard the business.

False declines are often unwarranted and occur due to lack of customer information Have you ever been shopping online, excited to get your hands on the latest tech gadget, only to be hit with the all-too-common disappointment of a credit card decline? Whom did you blame? The merchant? The issuer? The card associations? The answer is probably all of the above. False declines like the situation described above provoke an onslaught of consumer emotions ranging from shock and dismay to frustration and anger. Of course, consumers aren’t the only ones negatively impacted by false declines. Many times card issuers lose their coveted “top of wallet” position and/or retailers lose revenue when customers abandon the purchase altogether. False declines are unpleasant for everyone, yet consumers struggle with this problem every day — and fraud controls are only getting tighter. How does the industry mutually resolve this growing issue? The first step is to understand why it occurs. Most false declines happen when the merchant or issuer mistakenly declines a legitimate transaction due to perceived high risk. This misperception is usually the result of the merchant or issuer not having enough information to verify the authenticity of the cardholder confidently. For example, the consumer may be a first-time customer or the purchase may be a departure from the card holder’s normal pattern of transaction activity. Research shows that lack of a holistic view and no cross-industry transaction visibility result in approximately $40 billion of e-commerce declines annually. Think about this for a minute — $40 billion in preventable lost revenue due to lack of information. Merchants’ customer information is often limited to their first-hand information and experience with consumers. To solve this growing problem, Experian® developed TrustInsight™, a real-time engine to establish trusted online relationships over time among consumers, merchants and issuers. It works by anonymously leveraging transactional information that merchants and financial institutions already have about consumers to create a crowd-sourced TrustScore™. This score allows first-time online customers to get a VIP experience rather than a brand-damaging decline. Another common challenge for merchants is measuring the scope of the false declines problem. Proactively contacting consumers, directly capturing feedback and quickly verifying transaction details to recoup potential lost sales are best practices, but merchants are often in the dark as to how many good customers are being turned away. The solution — often involving substantial operational expense — is to hold higher-risk orders for manual review rather than outright declining them. With average industry review rates nearing 30 percent of all online orders (according to the latest CyberSource Annual Fraud Benchmark Report: A Balancing Act), this growing level of review is not sustainable. This is where industry collaboration via TrustInsight™ offers such compelling value. TrustInsight can reduce the review population significantly by leveraging consumers’ transactions across the network to establish trust between individuals and their devices to automate more approvals. Thankfully, the industry is taking note. There is a groundswell of focus on the issue of false declines and their impact on good customers. Traditional, operations-heavy approaches are no longer sufficient. A trust-based industry-consortium approach is essential to enhance visibility, recognize consumers and their devices holistically, and ensure that consumers are impacted only when a real threat is present.
