Frequently Asked Questions

How Do Gas Credit Cards Work?

For the most part, gas credit cards work the same as traditional credit cards. However, some gas credit cards issued in partnership with specific gas merchants, such as BP or ExxonMobil, may only allow you to use your card at that company's gas stations.

If you have a gas credit card that allows you to shop anywhere, pay close attention to the fine print. For example, gas stations operated by grocery stores, supermarkets, superstores and wholesale clubs may not be eligible.

What Credit Score Do You Need for a Gas Rewards Card?

There are gas credit cards available to consumers across the credit spectrum. However, the higher your score is, the better your odds of getting approved for a card that offers better rewards and perks.

How to Save Money on Gas

If you drive a lot for business or personal reasons, a gas credit card can help you make the most of your trips to the pump. In addition to that, here are a handful of ways you can save money on gas, particularly when prices are high:

  • Use a gas app to find the cheapest gas prices in your area.
  • Join fuel rewards programs with individual gas stations.
  • Take advantage of fuel rewards programs offered by grocery stores.
  • Try carpooling or taking public transportation whenever possible.
  • Drive defensively, avoiding rapid acceleration and sudden braking.
  • Keep up with your vehicle maintenance schedule.
  • Avoid premium gas unless necessary.

Get Matched With the Right Rewards Credit Card for You
