Frequently Asked Questions

  • Credit cards with a 0% intro APR promotion allow you to make purchases and possibly transfer a balance from another credit card and pay the balance down interest-free over a period of six to 21 months, depending on the card.

If you're using your 0% intro APR on purchases, all of your purchases made during the promotional period will enjoy the benefit. With balance transfers, though, card issuers typically require you to request your balance transfers within a certain period after you open your account—typically between two and four months. Also, balance transfers usually come with an upfront balance transfer fee of 3% to 5% of the transfer amount.

While you technically only have to make minimum monthly payments each month, it's best to pay off your full balance before the promotion expires to avoid the card's regular APR. If you miss a payment during the intro period, you could lose your promotional APR.

Also, keep in mind that if your card has a 0% intro APR only on balance transfers, it's best to avoid making purchases with the card because they may start accruing interest immediately until you pay off the transferred balance.

  • Unlike health care providers, vet clinics typically don't offer payment plans that don't involve you applying for credit. As a result, it may make sense to apply for a 0% intro APR credit card so you can get financing on your own terms.

Depending on which card you choose, you could also enjoy other benefits that you won't get with the vet's financing options, including a welcome bonus, rewards, insurance protections and more.

  • While there are credit cards available from popular pet retailers like Petco, these cards typically don't offer a lot of benefits on non-pet expenses. As a result, it's best to choose a card that you can use for everyday costs in addition to your pet expenses.

To determine which card is best for you, think about where you spend the most money on your pet, as well as on yourself. For example, many grocery stores offer pet food—one of your biggest ongoing expenses—so choosing a card that offers bonus rewards on grocery store purchases could make sense.

Alternatively, if you primarily shop at pet stores for pet food and accessories, you may consider a card that offers a high rewards rate on every purchase.

You'll also want to consider your other top spending categories, such as gas, dining and entertainment, to determine which card will give you the most value overall.
