If your weekly errands tend to involve visits to the same few retailers and websites, getting a co-branded store credit card could certainly be worth it. These cards generally offer bonus rewards when you shop at the particular store and its partners, and special perks for cardholders.

Some store cards don't limit your rewards opportunities, either. Several of our top picks offer good cash back rates on a variety of common purchases.

Best Card for Amazon and Whole Foods: Amazon Prime Rewards Visa Signature Card

With Amazon's purchase of Whole Foods, the Amazon Prime Rewards Visa Signature Card became even more rewarding. You can use it anywhere Visa cards are accepted. With this card you can earn:

  • 5% cash back at Amazon.com and Whole Foods
  • 2% cash back at gas stations, restaurants and drugstores
  • 1% cash back on all other purchases

You can redeem the cash back you earn when making purchases on Amazon.com. Or, once you accrue 2,000 points ($20 worth of cash back), you can request a statement credit on your credit card or direct deposit into an eligible bank account.

Although the Amazon Prime Rewards Visa Signature Card doesn't have an annual fee, this card is only available to Amazon Prime members, which costs $12.99 a month or $119 a year. The credit card has an intro offer for a $80 Amazon.com gift card once you're approved, which could help cover part of that membership cost for the first year.

Best Card for Big Box Stores: Target REDcard™ Credit Card

The Target REDcard™ Credit Card is a closed-loop credit card, meaning you can only use the card at Target and Target.com. If you're a fan of the big box store, the perks are certainly enticing, especially since the card doesn't have an annual fee or any paid membership requirements. You'll get:

  • A 5% discount on eligible Target purchases (Most purchases qualify, but there are exceptions for certain categories, such as prescriptions.)
  • Early access offers for special products and promotions
  • Free standard shipping on most purchases at Target.com
  • An extra 30 days for returns
  • A 10% off coupon every year

Another plus: You receive the 5% discount when you're checking out, so you won't need to track or redeem rewards.

No matter which credit card you choose, try to only use the card for purchases when you can afford to pay the bill in full. Although rewards can be enticing, the interest you'll pay when you carry a balance is generally higher than the rewards you can earn.
