Capital One takes the crown for banking mobile app satisfaction, according to the 2024 U.S. Credit Card Mobile App Satisfaction Study by J.D. Power. Here's how the top five banking mobile apps stack up and why they're the best.
1. Capital One
After taking second to Bank of America in 2023, the Capital One mobile app took the top spot in 2024, earning a rating of 678 points out of 1,000. The app has an impressive average rating of 4.9 out of 5 stars in the Apple App Store, as well as 4.5 out of 5 stars in the Google Play Store.
When you first log in, you'll be able to see available balances for all of your accounts—the bank allows you to open multiple savings accounts for individual savings goals. Once you tap on an account, you'll be able to do the following:
- View pending and completed transactions
- Review automatic transfers
- Pay bills
- Deposit a check with your device
- Review past statements
- Transfer funds
- Send money with Zelle
- Lock your debit card
Select the Offers icon at the bottom, and you'll be able to see various offers to earn up to 15% back at more than 1,000 retailers. These are mostly for online shopping, but there are some in-store deals.
If you have a question, you can chat with Capital One's virtual assistant, Eno. However, there's no live chat option with a human representative.
2. Bank of America
Despite being rated No. 1 in 2023, the Bank of America mobile app has taken a back seat to Capital One with a 662-point rating. The app carries an average rating of 4.8 out of 5 stars in the App Store, as well as 4.6 out of 5 stars in the Google Play Store.
On the main dashboard, you'll be able to view all of your accounts and balances. You'll also be able to see your net worth based on your accounts with the bank and its investment arm, Merrill Lynch, and view your FICO® Score☉ .
At the bottom of the screen, you'll have the option to deposit checks, pay bills, transfer money and send cash via Zelle. You can also take advantage of cash-back offers through BankAmeriDeals.
Once you tap on your account, you can view recent transactions and review past monthly statements. If you have questions, you can chat with the bank's virtual assistant, Erica. If you want to chat with a human representative, though, you'll be directed to the customer service phone line.
3. Chase
For the second year in a row, the Chase mobile app was ranked third with a rating of 656 points. In the App Store, the app has an average rating of 4.8 out of 5 stars, compared to 4.4 out of 5 stars in the Google Play Store.
When you log in to the app, you'll have a bird's eye view of your account balances. You can also do the following:
- Open a new account
- Track credit card rewards (if applicable)
- Add cash-back deals to your debit card with Chase Offers
- Check your VantageScore® credit score through Chase Credit Journey
- Track spending habits
- Pay bills
- Deposit checks
- View past monthly statements
You can even customize your dashboard with quick actions based on the features that are most important to you.
With the Wealth Plan tool, you can get an overview of your finances, including your net worth, track your spending activity and plan for long-term financial goals. You can even set up an investment account with the bank's investment arm, J.P. Morgan.
4. Wells Fargo
In fourth place, the Wells Fargo mobile app has a rating of 651, which ties the study's average. The bank's mobile app has an average rating of 4.9 out of 5 stars in the App Store and 4.8 out of 5 stars in the Google Play Store.
In the app's dashboard, you can view balances for each account, open a new account, view your FICO® Score and set and track different money goals. The app also allows you to do the following:
- Monitor transactions
- View past statements
- Set up account alerts
- Pay bills
- Transfer money
- Send cash with Zelle
- Deposit checks
- Lock and unlock your debit card
You can also add cash back deals to your debit card through the My Wells Fargo Deals program. If you need help, you can chat with the bank's virtual assistant, Fargo. If you want to talk to a human, however, you'll need to call.
5. Citi
Rounding out the top five is the Citi mobile app, which garnered a rating of 648 points. The app has an average rating of 4.9 out of 5 stars in the App Store and 4.7 out of 5 stars in the Google Play Store.
On the main login page, you can enable the snapshot feature, which lets you see your balance without signing in. Once you log in, you can select an individual account to view transactions and other details.
The app also allows you to do the following:
- Pay bills

- Make mobile check deposits
- Transfer money
- Send cash via Zelle
- Lock and unlock your debit card
- Check your FICO® Score
- Get spending insights
Unlike the other apps on our list, Citi doesn't have a virtual assistant to help answer basic questions. If you need help, you'll need to call the customer service line.
Features to Look for in a Banking Mobile App
When comparing bank options, you might be more interested in the account features than the mobile app. However, a poor mobile experience can impact your ability to manage your everyday finances, so it's important to know what you're getting.
Here are some features to pay attention to as you research financial institutions:
- Simple dashboard: Get a sense of how easy it is to get basic information about your accounts and other features, such as your credit score, other account options and spending insights.
- Security features: In most cases, you'll be able to set up biometric authentication, such as facial recognition or fingerprint scans, making it easier to access your account quickly. However, you'll also want to consider how easy it is to lock and unlock your debit card, dispute transactions and access other features to protect your account.
- Ease of use: Once you're in your account, consider how easy it is to complete basic banking functions, such as paying bills, transferring money, creating alerts, depositing checks and finding past statements. The easier it is, the better.
- Other products and services: Try to understand what else you can do in addition to managing your bank account. For example, some apps may provide spending insights, help you set and track savings goals and allow you to create a rough budget. Also, check to see if the bank offers credit cards, loans and investment accounts that you can keep track of in the mobile app.
